International Women in Engineering Day originated in the United Kingdom in 2014, established by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) to mark its 95th anniversary. The day is designed to raise the profile of women in engineering and to encourage more girls and women to consider engineering careers.

International Women in Engineering Day celebrates the achievements of women engineers and seeks to address the gender imbalance in the engineering fields.

The inaugural event was met with enthusiasm and quickly garnered attention, leading to its rapid growth in subsequent years. The initial success was a catalyst for the event receiving UNESCO patronage in 2016, a significant milestone that underscored its international importance and impact.

By 2017, the event had gained substantial international interest, prompting WES to expand its scope beyond the UK, thus transforming National Women in Engineering Day into International Women in Engineering Day. This change allowed for global participation, enabling organizations, educational institutions, corporations, and individuals from around the world to join in the celebration and promotion of gender diversity in engineering.
