Pi Day History

Physicist Larry Shaw originated the idea of celebrating Pi Day when working at the San Francisco Exploratorium. The first formal Pi Day celebration happened in 1988 on March 14th. The representation of the date is written as 3/14 in the United States month/date format and represent the first three digits of pi (3.14). The first known occasion was marked by Shaw and his colleagues by marching in circles at the museum and consuming pies! The U. S. House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing March 14th as National Pi Day in 2009. Pi Day has now become globally popular with folks around the world, particularly people interested in science. They often celebrate by engaging in activities related to mathematics and geometry. Schools and educational institutions often celebrate the day to highlight science and math related disciplines and to bring a sense of fun into the sciences. Contests, discussions, and other activities can be used to emphasize the significance of science and math.

All the science disciplines are effectively incorporated into the celebration and are considered a fun way to engage and interest younger students in STEM related disciplines. Pi Day is frequently observed on social media, where people and groups exchange mathematical jokes, trivia, and engage in challenges. Albert Einstein’s birthday also happens to be March 14th, making this date a truly auspicious date. Einstein is widely considered as one of the most eminent and influential scientists of all time. Celebrations took place on 3/14/15 at 9:26:53 a.m., the numerical date and time that together represent the first 10 digits of pi, 3.141592653.In 2022 Scientists and researchers at the Swiss University of Applied Sciences Graubünden calculated the constant π up to 62.8 trillion decimal places.Why bother calculating such a small number? The calculation helps the development and testing of supercomputers and new high-precision multiplication algorithms.
